Our kids have been on skis since they were two, so we've always carried a good selection for children across the whole age range, from tiny one piece suits to gear which your too cool for schoolers will find just about acceptable - while secretly loving it of course...

Below are some truths which we have found to be pretty much universal - hope they help.

  • Mitts are warmer than gloves and far easier to manipulate - this becomes truer as the size of the child you are dealing with decreases
  • It is so worth having spare mitts and gloves - less aggravation, more peace of mind
  • Your child will need a helmet - buy or rent, but don't show up to ski school without one. (Lots of junior helmets are adjustable so they will expand as the child grows and can be passed around families.)
  • Eye protection is vital and most kids seem to prefer goggles to glasses - they're also that bit less breakable...
  • Exposed bits of skin need high factor protection - it rubs off so re-slathering is a post-lunch ritual
  • Neck warmers (not scarves) are brilliant - why suffer with a chilled miserable child when you can have a ball skiing with one who's warm, comfortable and happy?
  • Snacks and water are a Good Thing - if you can carry them with you, stopping for drinks in mountain restaurants can be a treat rather than an absolute necessity
  • That thing you heard about fresh air and exercise meaning early nights for the kids and relaxed adult-centred evenings?  They lied...
